Kansas City's Westport district has been lucky to host Mediterranean delight, Jerusalem Cafe. For many years, the only exposure the Northland had to this business was through their food truck presence at community festivals each fall.
Now, a new chapter in Northland dining! Jerusalem Cafe has opened a new location on the west side of I-35, near Liberty. Situated on the southwest corner of MO 152 Highway and Flintlock Road, this restaurant is nestled in a cozy strip mall building just off the highway. Convenient surface parking is available.
Upon entering the space, the aroma of Mediterranean spices warmly greet you. The business has one main dining space filled with booths and tables, plus patio seating. Interior seating capacity is 82 people. Open windows into the kitchen let the scents of tasty food drift into the main part of the room.
We were quickly seated and met our friendly server. We ordered the falafel for an appetizer followed by lamb and beef gyro. I picked the rice and lentil soup. My husband picked rice and a greek salad.
The wait time was minimal and we enjoyed the picturesque decor for the space. The food was piping-hot and fresh. Wonderful spices on the lentil soup. Crisp lettuce and vegetables on the greek salad. The rice was aromatic and topped with a spoonful of tomato paste. Delightful!
The star of the dish, however, is the gyro! We've had gyros from other restaurants. Immidators often load up their gyro with tzatziki sauce to mask the overcooked and dried out meat. Jerusalem Cafe's gyros are truly the best!
The lamb and beef are well-seasoned and freshly sauteed. Meat cut thicker for juicy and savory flavor in every bite.
The menu is robust! Entrees, salads, sandwiches and a great variety of gluten-free and vegan choices.
We look forward to making this location a personal favorite! -

Ok, I'm very fond of Mediterranean food even though you can seldom buy a beer to complement the tastes at a Middle Eastern restaurant. I have eaten twice at the Liberty location of the Jerusalem Cafe, lunch and dinner. What did I find?
* Very friendly and helpful waiters.
* Good prices, especially for the sandwiches which are served with your choice of salad or soup and rice or fries. It's summer, so I've done salad and rice both times and really liked them.
* Clean and well decorated with a hint of Jerusalem in a small, convenient strip center.
* Prices are very good for sandwiches and good for entrees.
* Adequate seating and an outdoor hookah setting is planned, though I won't use it
* My chicken shawarma selections and Carol's Gyro Philly, we would rate as an 8-9, with a ten being reserved for tzatziki of the caliber of that served at International Cafe in Columbia, MO -

Nice location in a busy strip mall. You walk in, no host station, but they seat you. Small place, but with lots of seating, many booths for a little more privacy. The walls were decorated with murals and photos of Jerusalem. The host and waitress that helped us were both excellent and service added a full star because they perfectly attentive and responsive, quick and kind without being intrusive.
The menu has a satisfying variety and I was delighted to see the standard cast of middle eastern characters represented with moussaka, shawarma, gyro, et. al.
We opted for sandwiches and selected the gyro and falafell with baba ghanouj. The sandwiches are all pita with iceberg, tomato, onion and some sauce (as appropriate). Sides are your choice of rice or fries and either a salad or lentil soup.
The salad is a small chunk of iceberg, a small tomato slice, an olive, a piece of feta dressed with an olive oil vinaigrette. Fresh, but nothing special. Fries are thin, prepackaged variety.
For the sandwiches themselves, the pita's were fresh and didn't crumble. The falafell sandwich had two halves, each of which had two (maybe three) large falafell. The falafell patties/spheres were fresh and crunchy. The little fried morsels had a nice cumin, coriander and garbanzo bean flavor. This one also had the baba ghanouj which should have added add a thick tang and smoky flavor. The baba ghanouj was very creamy and added perfectly to the sandwich.
The gyro, ordered by my lunch partner, appeared to be of the typical meatloaf variety (to contrast the chunks of meat style). I was told it was as good as any gyro he had previously eaten including the current favorite - so I took that as a good sign.
Portion size looks a little small on the plate, but is not only more than enough is actually generous with the salad/soup and for less then $10 with table service.
Overall, thought this was great, can't wait to go back and try some more items on the menu and I recommend that you try it too! -

Oh my!
I have been reading a lot about the new Jerusalem Café that has opened in Liberty recently. So, tonight I made a little jaunt over there to try it out, and I'm glad I did. To avoid the rush, I got there around 4:20. I was seated by a very friendly waitress and offered a menu, which I looked over very carefully. It didn't take me long to decide.
For an appetizer, I went with Falafel, a mixture of chickpeas, parsley, garlic, onions and spices. Made into patties then deep fried. Garnished with tomatoes and onions and served with pita bread and a side of tahini sauce.
For the entrée. I chose The Lamb Pastry Plate; lamb will always catch my eye. I just love lamb and in my humble opinion not enough restaurants serve it. They take lamb meat marinate it and cook it with fresh vegetables then wrapped it in phyllo pastry and baked to a Golden Crisp serve it with rice and roasted vegetables.
Mediterranean food is somewhat new to me and this was my first-time eating Falafel. Piping hot and crunchy, almost a bit hard on the outside, and creamy smooth on the inside, it was a delicious combination of flavors. The pita bread was warm fresh. It was a very tasty way to start a meal.
The Lamb Pastry Plate was outstanding. Big, tender chunks of tender lamb hiding in a pastry shell, life just doesn't get any better than this. To be honest with you, I paid more attention to the lamb then the rice and veggies, but what little I did eat of them, they were good. Hot tea with mint leaves was my drink choice.
The Northland is incredibly lucky to have another great restaurant to go along with the great ones we already are so lucky to have. I can only hope that Northlanders will continue to support all of these fine eateries.
Well Done Jerusalem Café!

I am so glad to have Jerusalem Cafe in the Northland!
The falafel appetizer was perfectly seasoned, cooked and the sauce was to die for.
My husband had the chicken curry and I had the lamb gyro with rice. The food/menu was authentic with a variety of options. I have a feeling you can't go wrong with anything you order. Oh...if you're a Halva fan=it was incredible! Except, I like mine less sweet so will order next time without the honey drizzle. I'll be going back many, many, many times over!
